Text Box: In the summer of 1999, I was lucky enough to visit the Western Himalayas for 6 weeks
with my good friend, the much travelled, Jim Vickers. During that time, we spent 9 days living as the personal guests of a family of Tibetan Nomads, in Chang Thang, Ladakh.
As a result of what I saw and heard, I pledged to start an aid fund for the Nomads, many
of whom are on the verge of giving up this noble lifestyle due to outside pressures.
I also made a great many new friends, particularly at the remote monastery of Lamayuru,
where my eyes were opened to the mysteries and beauty of Tibetan Buddhist rituals.
As well as the 2,112 photos I took, I also recorded several hours of sound on a Pro Sony
Minidisc Recorder. Playing back the incredible chants of the monks and the music of the
drums, cymbals and horns, I was astounded at the quality, especially considering the
extremes of sound frequency and also of the conditions at such high altitudes.
A very talented young friend, Lee Mason, has combined many of these sounds with his own amazing ambient music. The result is a meditation/relaxation CD ‘Tibetan Soul’.
